ABOUT THE SERIES:

Tour d’Italia is our ongoing culinary tasting tour around the 20 regions of Italy—in alphabetical order. We started in November 2018 with our family's home region of Abruzzo, and have since continued to Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Piedmonte & Sardinia, Sicily, Toscana, and Trentino-Alto Adige.

…And we are excited to now make our next stop with you in the region of UMBRIA.

ABOUT THE REGION:

Umbria, often called the “green heart of Italy,” is a landlocked region in central Italy known for its rolling hills, medieval hill towns, and deep-rooted traditions. Nestled between Tuscany, Lazio, and Le Marche, it offers a quieter, more rustic charm compared to its better-known neighbors. Its landscape is dotted with olive groves, vineyards, sunflower fields, and ancient forests, while towns like Perugia, Assisi, and Orvieto boast stunning architecture and centuries-old art and spiritual heritage.

Umbria’s cuisine is earthy, hearty, and deeply tied to the land. Wild truffles, particularly the prized black truffles from Norcia, are a regional treasure, often showcased in pastas, eggs, and meats. Legumes, farro, and game meats are staples of the Umbrian table, and extra virgin olive oil — robust and peppery — is among Italy’s finest. The region’s wine production is equally revered: Sagrantino di Montefalco, a bold and tannic red made from a native grape, is Umbria’s flagship wine, while crisp Grechetto whites provide a balanced contrast.

Together, Umbria’s landscape, cuisine, and wines reflect a region that is humble yet rich, simple yet soulful — a place where tradition is honored in every dish and every glass.
