ABOUT THE SERIES:
Tour d’Italia is our ongoing culinary tasting tour around the 20 regions of Italy—in alphabetical order. We started in November 2018 with our family's home region of Abruzzo, and have since continued to Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Lazio, Liguria, Lombardy, Marche, Molise, Piedmonte & Sardinia…
…And we are excited to now make our next stop with you in the region of SICILY.
ABOUT THE REGION:
The island of Sicily boasts a cuisine that is a delightful blend of Mediterranean flavors, influenced by its diverse history of Greek, Arab, and Spanish dominations. Iconic dishes include arancini, golden and crispy rice balls filled with ragù, mozzarella, or peas, and caponata, a sweet and sour eggplant dish simmered with tomatoes, olives, and capers. Seafood lovers revel in pasta con le sarde, a quintessential Sicilian pasta made with fresh sardines, wild fennel, raisins, and pine nuts. Sicily's rich volcanic soil yields vibrant produce, notably the blood oranges from the slopes of Mount Etna, which feature prominently in both savory and sweet dishes.
Sicilian wines are equally captivating and deeply rooted in the island's ancient viticulture. The red varieties, with their robust flavor profiles and notes of dark fruit, spice, and earthy undertones, make perfect companions to the island's hearty dishes. For those who prefer white wines, there are crisp, floral, and citrusy options that pair beautifully with Sicily's seafood fare. The island is also renowned for its fortified wines, which range from dry to sweet and add depth to both cooking and sipping experiences. These wines, nurtured by the island's unique terroir, reflect the rich cultural and agricultural heritage of Sicily, offering wine enthusiasts a taste of the island's storied past and vibrant present.
